Courtney Platt: Cayman Islands Wedding Photographer

For me, weddings are every bit as important and unrepeatable as any assignment I’ve ever done for National Geographic Magazine.  I’ll go to any length to make sure that I get the very best images I can… without intruding on the couple’s enjoyment of the moment.  It is, in fact, that very enjoyment that I am keen to capture.  Making pictures of people having fun is itself a lot of fun!  Anticipating the action, reading and augmenting the ambient light and capturing “the Geographic Moment”, puts a big smile on my face too.  Henri Cartier-Bresson called it “the decisive moment”, when a facial expression or physical movement reached it’s peak and then passed in a fraction of a second… but was frozen in time eternally by the decision to snap the shutter at the perfect moment.

A wedding photographer does much more than freeze moments… we also tell a wonderful story filled with anticipation, excitement, fun  and love filled emotions.  There is a prelude, the event itself and then a finale.  There are characters, props, settings and character interactions.  Experience guides me from moment to moment in choosing when to be ready for what, so that the images we make will tell the whole story for you and your great-great-great grandchildren long into the future.    When I say “we” it is because you help me make your images by having the most fun you possibly can.  That’s all I ask of you on your wedding day… “show us the love you share, have a whole lot of fun with each other and with all of the friends and family who came to show their love for you too” and I’ll be guaranteed to present you with yet another superb story.

Cayman Islands Photography: My Style

People constantly ask me if I do journalistic style, candid photos.  I never knew any other kind.  I think it’s been about twenty years since stodgy wedding photographers used to line people up, shoot portraits and go home when the dinner was served.  Yes, we still do classic portraits and constantly seek new “candid” poses as well, but nearly every photographer yearns to stay for the reception to catch the real fun!  It’s always after dinner that people really start to let their inhibitions go and have BIG FUN, providing wonderful candid images of the bride and groom partying with their beloved guests!  Where I shine is in my blending of the ambient and augmented lighting to create “natural looking” light that carries deep into the scene, rather than the harsh, direct flash from the camera that looks so artificial and is so popular with less experienced wedding photographers.  It takes extra effort to carry and set up remote flashes for that as well as the experience to know when and where to use it.  I will spare no amount of sweat to get the best photographs I know how (and my bag of tricks is deep).

Neither the most, nor the least expensive photographer in the Cayman Islands, but Courtney is arguably as good as it gets in a pool that includes several world class photographers.

Perhaps most importantly, I truly enjoy weddings and I would love to photograph yours!  Whether it will be a romantic, two person destination wedding on the beach, or the biggest event of the year, it would be my pleasure to do my very best for you.
